Asian Elephant

Hey concerned people of the world,

Asian Elephants. Sure they might be a little heavy, a lot of maintenance, and most definitely not house pets, but they are still important. Disappointingly, there are only around 20,000 of the left today. These beautiful and majestic creatures that hold so much importance to different cultures are in danger of going extinct. The elephants are usually approximately 21 feet long, 6.5 to 11 feet tall, and weigh around 11,000 pounds. Some motor homes weigh that much! In addition, elephants are herbivores so they only eat roots, grasses, shoots, fruit, and bark. It is possible for an adult elephant to consume over 300 poubnds of food a day. Elephants live in areas where they have access to water because they must have a drink at least once a day. Not to mention that if they have abundant resources, they love to shower by using their trunks to spray water all over themselves. FUN FACT: the Asian Elephant’s trunk consists of about 100,000 muscles! But these amazing animals are in danger. They were once hunted for the valuable and rare ivory in their tusks, but it has now been outlawed. Yet, the poaching has not been completely eliminated in all areas. In addition, because the population of Asia is continuously growing, the elephants have been forced into smaller areas, thus creating a “survival for the fittest” game. It's horrible that these elephants must suffer due to human faults.

To help out these elephants, go to the World Wild Life page on Asian Elephants. Scroll down to “How You Can Help” to get more information.

Well that’s a wrap, so until next time,

SVR
